There was a compelling presentation in Lowell billed as a “Counter-Recruitment” or “Truth-In-Recruiting” event on the afternoon of Thursday May 15, 2008 at St. Anne’s Church Parish Hall, adjacent to Lowell High School. The keynote speaker was Iraq War Veteran Liam Madden of Iraq Veterans Against the War, ably assisted by local performance poet Anthony Febo, and Father Ramon, rector of St. Anne’s Parish. Three raw-audio excerpts of the program are available below. Liam Madden gave a good overview of the realities of enlistment. There were also original and “cover” readings of poetry about military service and war. Father Ramon presented his unique perspective as a former military chaplain and 1960’s era Cuban emigrant, and our own DJ Lindolfo gave an impassioned plea to the young people in the audience to consider the people of the oppressed countries where they, as soldiers, are called on to fight, as well as the direct effects on their own lives. For more information, go to http://www.greaterlowellpeace.org The program was co-sponsored by UMASS Lowell’s Peace and Conflict Studies Institute, Merrimack Valley for Peace, American Friends Service Committee and the Haymarket Peoples’ Fund in cooperation with Lowell’s UTEC program, which hopes to expand on the themes of the event by making a video documentary this Summer. Warning: Strong language: only the Liam Madden segment is FCC-friendly.
